Jesus stood still. The danger was that Christ would pass altogether, but now he has stopped.
Our prayers must have this focus, this strong determination not to give up. Does it mean that the Lord does not want to hear us or does not intend to answer us, when, at first, he carries on walking past us and seems to ignore us? No. Faith has to take hold of his kindness and mercy, and to believe that he is willing to give more than we can ask or think. We seem to get little encouragement from him at first, but behind a frowning providence, he hides a smiling face. The Lord hears prayer. He responds to our earnest requests. He feels our need even more strongly than we do.
We must come to the Lord believing in his power, believing in his willingness to answer our petitions, our deepest needs. We are coming to a Saviour who has already come so far towards us. He has taken our nature and been born into our world. He has come and preached peace to us. If he asks us to come a short distance to him, it is not because he is making things hard for us, but because he wants us to act in accordance with our perception of our need. Reconciliation with God is our greatest need, and we must know this.
