Mark 10:8

It is repeated – ‘one flesh’. One flesh simply means one body. In other words, if one is hurt, the other should be hurt too, because you are metaphorically one flesh and you cannot be indifferent to each other’s hurts. Ephesians 5:28 says, ‘So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies’ – one flesh, one body. ‘He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones’ (Ephesians 5:28-30). The apostle Paul says surely there can be no self-hurt. If one hurts the other, you are hurting yourself. You have the other always in mind and you act in sympathy and this is to the exclusion of other relationships. Marriage is to the exclusion of other relationships.
