‘And they answered and said unto Jesus [these pathetic words], We cannot tell.’ That was not an honest answer.
If you have no reverence for God, no belief in God, no fear of God, no awe of God, he simply won't deal with you. You cannot come to God on this kind of basis: ‘O God, if you are there, demonstrate yourself to me!’ God will ignore you; God won't respond to that. This is ever the way with the Lord and with Christ. Those people, they forfeited any possibility that Christ would deal with them, because they hardened their hearts and had no reverence or respect. You must believe in him. You must have reverence for him; you must trust him, for him to deal with you.
We need an authority for everything we do in the faith. We can't make it up ourselves. We don't have the wisdom to figure out God's requirements, God's plan, God's standards, or the grounds on which God will receive people and bless them. We can only go by God's word. Everything from our pulpits must be grounded in the authority of God's Word. The preacher knows nothing of himself. It must come from revelation. John was an authentic prophet, and he had the authority to point out Christ.
