Mark 11:4
Comments
The two disciples go and find themselves living out the fulfilment of Christ’s words. The place is as he described; the animals are tied just as he described, and they play their part and loose the animal. Probably this is not something they have ever done before. They are taking someone else’s property, but they are doing it at the commandment of Christ. It is the Lord who is taking this animal and he has caused the disciples to be involved in this, so that on this occasion they can see the divine working. Sure enough they are challenged and those who challenge respond immediately to the fact that the master has need of the animal. The straight away release the animal, and banish any further suspicion of what the disciples are doing. The disciples also have a lesson to learn from this about the Lord’s rights over all that they have.
Application
All that the believer has belongs to the Lord, because all that we have has been given by him, and he can call upon us at any time to yield up our possessions to him. He does not ask our permission to take from us what we have at any time for all that we have belongs to him, and we need to learn that, and in recognition of this principle the disciples did not ask permission from the owner before loosing the colt. We are stewards of whatever we possess, and must be willing to return anything at any time if he requires. He gives us sufficient for our needs, and it is our privilege use the rest in his service. What greater honour could the owners of this mare and colt have, than to make them available to the Lord for such a purpose.
