He wanted his disciples to know about this. There is a very small event but an important principle. The translation could be strengthened. It is almost a double superlative. They cast in of their super-abundance. They could so easily afford it. They had more than they needed and out of their even-more-than-they-needed, they cast in and very ostentatiously no doubt.
Application
This poor widow is not necessarily an example to us of how much to give – we may be able to give far more than her – but she is certainly an example to us that we should be stewarding to the Lord and rendering up to him in terms of substance and energy and effort really in a way that is costly to us, because Christ comes first and his work is everything and souls are everything and relief of the needy is everything to the Christian mind. So there is a great principle. She gave in the estimation of Christ, who sees everything that we give, she gave, well, it was the motive and the cost to her that he noted.
