But now the owner does something and says something that no one would ever do or say. Normal human behaviour cannot do justice to the grace of God.
In our personal history this describes us. We have been given life, the air we breathe, an instinct for God. All the evolutionary brainwashing sent our way cannot get that out of our minds. Privately that instinct is still there. Also we are given a conscience, a voice within that tell us this is wrong. We have knowledge that there is a God and we need his pardon. But we say, ‘I want to enjoy life’s experiences. I want to enjoy myself in any way I think fit.’ We slam shut the door on Christ. ‘I am in possession of my life.’ Yet the parable shows us the long-suffering of God. One servant is sent and then another. God calls us a thousand times. Surely if the Bible tells us about the grace of God and his willingness to pardon all who come, our hearts will be melted. But no, we spit in his face. ‘I want to be the lord of my own life.’
If we reject Christ, God has no further messenger to send to us. There is no other Saviour than him. He is the perfect Saviour, the perfect man. Wouldn’t we have expected Israel to receive him when he came teaching such wonderful things, explaining all mysteries, performing such wonderful compassionate miracles? Wasn’t their rejection of him altogether beyond explanation? Wasn’t their cry for his crucifixion incomprehensible?
