Although no one knows the precise day or hour of Christ’s return, these general signs will show that the end is approaching. Spring is a wonderful time, full of promise. The blossoming of the fig tree is like a calendar telling us summer is near, so when you see these signs you can be sure that the last day is almost upon you. What will it mean for the billions living on earth at the time? For those who have rejected the word of God and the preaching of the gospel, it will be a time of increasing trepidation and terror, but Christ’s people will recognize these signs, and for them it will be the confirmation that God’s plan is on track, and that all that they hope for is about to be fulfilled. As the world looks on with great alarm, the believer will draw encouragement from the very same phenomenon. For the Christian this world is a tired world, a worn-out world. It cannot go on for ever and he does not want it to. He longs to see his Saviour face to face, and to receive his resurrection body, setting him free from the presence of sin within and sin without.
Application
Believers are in a state of waiting, and waiting for something that you desire is never an entirely comfortable state to be in. You can do it because you are investing in the future, but you cannot go on waiting for ever. Therefore the news that it is near, even at the door is what you long to hear, because you will not have to hold on for much longer. Christ has designed this encouragement for his church, and she will need it to get through the last trials she has to face.
