Do we appreciate the word of Christ as we should? How different it is to any human word! What limited knowledge we human beings have! Who could make a statement like this but one who knows all things? Who among mortal men and women would dare to speak like this? Where would they get knowledge of the future that gave them confidence to say such a thing? Who, having made such a claim, would dare to open their mouth and speak on any subject of significance in case they had not weighed up properly the truth of what they said? How could they measure the endurance of their words against the persistence of the heaven and earth? Yet Christ speaks of ‘things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world’ (Matthew 13:35). Secular man believes the sun is about 4.5 billion years old and has another 5 billion years to go, but he has taken no account of Christ’s word which has determined a day when the heavens shall pass away. Who can know this but God?
