The Lord Jesus has told the Pharisees (John 7:33) that he is going away. He will give further instructions to the disciples about this during this last week (John 13:33, 36; 14:2; 16:5; 17:11), and other parables given in these closing days of his ministry employ the same image of an absent owner (Luke 19:12; Matthew 25:14).
This is an illustration for the disciples. The apostles are going to have to serve Christ in his absence and be ready to lay down their lives for him. Every Christian is going to represent his Lord to an unbelieving world. This will involve bearing shame for his sake, remaining absolutely faithful to his message, living a life of obedience. Some may be given responsibility in Christ’s church; there are pastors and elders and deacons that Christ appoints. Will they feel responsible for the flock of Christ? Will they feed Christ’s sheep and feed his lambs, or will they scatter the flock and feed themselves (Jeremiah 23:2; Ezekiel 34:2)? Will they watch out for error and understand the difference between true and false doctrine, true and false practice? Will they protect the flock against wolves that attack? Will they make money out of the church of God as the self-seeking prosperity deceivers do? Watching includes carrying on all the service that Christ has given us to do while we wait for his return.
