It was the first day of unleavened bread, the Thursday. The passover lamb had been bought and killed in the temple courtyard that they were to eat in an upper room (unknown to the disciples at the time that it was killed). It was killed in the afternoon of the day, and in the evening it would be eaten. ‘His disciples said unto him’ – time was going on; most people had prepared the passover meal in their homes – ‘Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?’ They knew the Lord would eat the passover because through his earthly life he meticulously followed the ceremonial law himself, because he was a perfect Saviour. He lived under the law and he obeyed the ceremonial law, so they knew he would eat it. But why was it left so late? – the lamb had probably been slain, and the day was drawing on – Well because Judas must not know until the last minute so that he couldn't arrange a betrayal to interrupt the passover. That was vital for the Lord's last moments with the disciples. The first Lord's Supper had to be inaugurated.
