Peter’s refusal to believe that he is capable of being offended at Christ calls for a yet stronger prediction from the Lord. It is a very detailed prediction. Peter will not only be offended. It will be worse than that. He will not only be scattered as Christ has said; he will explicitly deny the Lord: deny that he is a disciple, and deny that he even knows the Lord. How could there be a clear instance of being offended at Christ. He will not just do this once, but he will do it three times, and somehow he will not remember the Lord’s warning here until after the third of these denials. It will be the sound of the cock crowing that bring this saying to his remembrance. Before dawn, you will three times deny me, says the Lord.Christ had to carry out the work of redemption single-handed, all alone. If he was not the God Man, how could he not be crushed at the failure of his disciples at this key time? Even Peter, who was afterwards to lead the apostolic band was to fail utterly. But Christ did not depend on man; he depended alone on his Father in heaven, and he would complete the task assigned to him, however difficult it was.
