They arrive at the Garden of Gethsemane. It is a secluded place. It has an identity and a name, so it was probably a walled or fenced off garden. It is at the foot of the Mount of Olives, and it means ‘house of olives’, so there was either a building there among the olive trees, or – since it was a very rocky place at the foot of the mountain – there was a cave which housed an olive press. It would seem that it was owned by a follower of Christ. It was a place to which Christ went repeatedly with the disciples for instruction of the disciples. ‘And he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here while I shall pray.’ Pray: this is the key word. What is Christ going to be doing during the foretaste of the sufferings of Calvary? He's going to be in prayer. How different from the disciples! Of course he is the infallible Messiah. He is God as well as man. But he has to suffer in his human nature, as well as in his Godhead to be truly our representative.
