Gethsemane: the foretaste! What was it all about? Why was it necessary? To begin with, nobody in the history of the world would be able to say, ‘When Christ died on Calvary, he couldn't have known what was coming. He was taken by complete surprise by Calvary. You say it was voluntary that he went. You say it was from his own free heart and spirit that he went to Calvary. But he didn't know the terrors of Calvary until he got there.’ O yes, he did! He had the foretaste in Gethsemane, and it almost crushed him and overcame him.
