In his human nature he longed for human company. He wanted them to pray. He would withdraw, says Luke, a stone’s throw from them. They would hear what he was praying but they would be rather removed from his presence. He wanted them to hear his prayer. He wanted them to pray also for themselves and for him. He wanted them to see something of his suffering. ‘Tarry ye here, and watch’, and others add, ‘and pray.’
