We learn from John’s Gospel that it was Simon Peter who struck with his sword. Perhaps other disciples also had swords.
Matthew adds that Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword’ (Matthew 26:52). The church of Christ has far greater weapons than the sword. It has the sword of the Spirit, which is able to do what no physical sword can do, for it can reach into the unbelieving heart, ‘piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit’ (Hebrews 4:12), as the gospel is preached. No force ever brought anyone into the kingdom of heaven. Rome tried to use force compel people to believe what it taught, but it never made one true convert. True religion is a voluntary expression of faith in Christ, and no one can be forced into it. Those who think they can force others to conform to their faith have a very low ambition, for the most they can do is bring about outward conformity. Only the Spirit can create a willing spirit.
