Every attempt to find an accusation against Christ was failing, and high priest was despairing of getting witnesses that suited his purpose. So the exasperated and fuming Caiaphas stood up and asked Jesus directly to give some defence. ‘Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee?’ They couldn’t make the statements properly, so he asked Christ to give some defence. ‘Aren't you going to say anything?’ Christ wouldn't dignify all these lies with a single word at this point. ‘What is it which these witness against thee?’ Fancy having to ask the one accused to explain better the testimony of the false witnesses against him!
