This the most astonishing event in the history of the universe. Who would have thought that Jesus Christ, eternally God, equal with the Father, the second person of the glorious Trinity, should enter into time and be made flesh, take on a human body and personality to be our representative, to be our sin-bearer, our atoning Saviour! It is the most costly event in the history of the universe, that the Son of the eternal God should be yielded up for his people. It is the most productive event in the history of the universe, in that countless souls were saved, ransomed, delivered, for all eternity. This is the most amazing theme we could possibly look at. So we have the atoning death of Jesus Christ, and here he is crucified outside the city, treated as a criminal, as an outcast.
