‘And the superscription of his accusation was written over: the King of the Jews.’ There is a little more to it than that, as the other Gospels tell us.
God’s enemies can do nothing to harm the truth. Although the intention was to cast derision on Jesus of Nazareth, God overruled on behalf of his Son to ensure there was a true testimony. The Jews are not allowed to water down the testimony by reducing it to a mere claim, and the intention of Pilate that this statement should be written scornfully does nothing to harm the Lord Jesus. The truth of God is robust. Similarly, words spoken in contempt of God’s people cannot do us any harm, because God will exalt his people out of the dust.
