Pilate is amazed. Luke and john record that following an initial examination, Pilate comes out of the Praetorium and says the Jews, ‘I find no fault in this man’. As a result they launch an avalanche of accusations at Jesus, but he remains silent. He wasn’t going to defend himself against any of their silly charges. Pilate marvelled at his self-control, his courage, his bearing and his gentle disdain for all that they brought against him. ‘I find no fault with him’ – that is in the day of eternal justice what the high priests and all who were with him – the whole Sanhedrin Council – whether ultimately saved or unsaved, will be forced to acknowledge.
