What tremendous courage these women had! Matthew, Mark, and Luke indicate in various ways that when Christ suffered and died on Calvary’s Cross, these women stood at a great distance, afar off. John’s Gospel tells us they stood near.
In a far lesser way we are put to the test. We know that he was bearing away our sin. We know that he had to go through that. We know he is risen from the dead. He has answered our prayers a thousand times; we have proved him as Christian people. Yet we find ourselves in circumstances a lot less distressing than theirs and we go to pieces and we panic and we find earthly solutions for our problems, and get into self-pity and distress and we fail to trust him. Admire the faith of these ladies. Right to the end, when everything was falling apart, his death was having a profound influence in their lives and though they did not understand, they trusted what they had already proved and discovered and believed. So they are a tremendous example of Christian trust, even before their understanding was confirmed.
