In Pilate’s experience, those who had been crucified did not die this quickly. But Christ, having suffered, had voluntarily yielded up his spirit to the Father.
Is he like some of us? He believed, but not enough to commit his life. He believed in Christ, but not enough to stand for him. He was rich, but he hadn't yet given anything to the service of Christ. He was moved in his heart and he had faith in Christ, but the scope of his faith was not very great. Is your faith like that? You have come to believe in Christ and his shed blood. You've even repented of your sin, and you’ve yielded your life to him, but you don't believe that he can support you if you yield yourself fully to him. You are not one of those who would come forward and serve him. You read the Bible every day and you have faith in Christ, but not enough to teach a Sunday School class, not enough to visit the community, not enough to witness and suffer the reactions. That was the situation with Joseph of Arimathea. He hadn't thought of giving up his position. But when he saw him suffering and dying in agony, and the three hours of darkness, he believes more and more: ‘This is my Messiah. This is my God and my Lord.’ He knew the prophecy of Isaiah that he would make his grave with a rich man in his death, and he would be numbered with the transgressors. So he said, ‘I am the rich man who will provide his grave. I have had it prepared for me in my death. It is where he will be buried, and I must go to Pilate and face the consequences, and be ready to sacrifice my position if necessary. He yielded himself wholly to Christ. The incidental circumstances around the cross of Christ give us miracle after miracle. God brought him from being a sleepy believer, to being a genuine, righteously living believer in Christ. Will you yield yourself fully to him?
