When the four friends carrying the paralytic reach the door of the house they discover they cannot get near Christ, and yet this is why they have come. You would have thought that sympathy would have let him through; yes, but they were so packed that you could not move to make room.
It is the same sense of urgency and determination we should try to bring people to the Lord today. We must learn to take a personal interest in each one, and to feel responsible for them. We must believe that if only we can bring a person to the Lord, he will forgive and convert them.
We expect that if we are to get religious help, we must go to those qualified in this world to give it. One of the first things you have to learn is to approach Christ directly. Some think, surely you can’t go directly to God. This passage teaches that we should go directly to Christ. Go home and find a quiet place. Humbly confess your sins and plead that he would change you.
You must struggle to come to Christ and overcome all obstacles. You don’t want to lose those friends maybe. There will be a struggle. You have to say, it doesn’t matter if I get words of sarcasm; to know Christ is better than all earthly friendship.
