The scribes have condemned Christ in their hearts and dismissed his words as blasphemy – because he has declared that this man’s sins are forgiven. Included in that condemnation is the assertion that he has lied about this.
Christ deals with this man’s sin first, not just for the benefit of the scribes but for our benefit also. You may have bodily sickness, and hopefully you can get help with it. But there is a disease much worse which is always fatal and will take you to hell. Christ does not wish to cure the body and leave us with this much more serious disease. We are sinners by nature and sinners by choice. We are born sinners, but we soon choose to be sinners. It gets worse. Sin ruins the soul, weakens me, cuts me off from God. It ploughs lines on my face. What goes on inside is a terrible sight. I must have my lust. Sin may be pleasurable for a season, but there is a price to pay. But the gospel does not just condemn sin; it shows the remedy for it. God says, ‘I will cancel your debt of sin. I will give you a tender heart, and take away your hardness of heart.’ We cannot do that ourselves. The church cannot do it. Being in the atmosphere of worship cannot do it. Christ alone can do it.
Without forgiveness, we cannot know Christ at all. Maybe someone thinks, If I can get help from God, he will help me to get a better job, overcome my circumstances, help me attain some goal in life. No, before God does anything, he must first deal with our sin. He won’t solve financial or loneliness problems until sin is dealt with. Salvation from sin is your greatest need. Maybe you say, I am not so bad. When you fix your eye on someone who has gone much further into sin, you may feel quite good. But no, God is pure and holy and we so vile and sinful in his sight. We are all suffering from a much worse disease than this paralytic. Sin disables the soul. I am ruled by it. I cannot communicate with God. I can do nothing to heal myself. Sin is progressive. It makes us loathsome. Sin is there in the heart also, what you are. You do sinful things because you are sinful. We are deep dyed sinners, so far from God, and we have to feel our need.
