That power was for them. They needed special authentication. They would give testimony to the resurrection of Christ, having seen it, they would be those who carried the torch, who carried the flag, after the death and resurrection of Christ. Through them authoritative Scripture was given; they would need special revelation. What right does Peter (through the Gospel of Mark) have to tell us this in an authoritative way? Well, they could do the very things in a measure that Christ did: ‘to have power to heal sicknesses, and’ – as a separate thing – ‘to cast out devils’, or demons of darkness. The apostles, the disciples here, were special: a special order.
Application
Now today that is often forgotten, and it is said, ‘If they could work miracles, then all of you should be able to, or at least the teachers, the leaders.’ But no, that was confined to them, and that is what the New Testament tells us. In the epistles and in Acts, when wonderful things were done, they were done by the hands of the apostles.
