Satan has turned on himself and is working against himself. This is what they are suggesting. Like a kingdom that becomes divided, or a house that turns against itself, so Satan is working against his former policies, and undoing his own plans. Is that their theology, their explanation for what Christ has done? Ridiculous! Satan is an intelligent agent and one who operates in a realm high above any earthly king. We fight ‘against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places’ (Ephesians 6:12). They knew enough about how earthly kingdoms operate to judge the matter. If no earthly kingdom or house would behave in this way, what foolishness it is to suggest that Satan, who is far more skilful, does so? They would rather embrace an absurdity than admit that Christ is from God. They have no answer. They stand condemned. But so obdurate are they, they will not change their position. That is the unpardonable sin: someone who has such light, such clear evidence, and yet he is determined and unreasonable in the extreme and will not repent and come to the obvious conclusion. But this is all part of the preparation of the church. The disciples are selected, and then we see the opposition that Christ would receive, the disciples would receive, and we too receive. That happens to us.
