‘Stand forth’ – ‘rise’ is the verb in the Greek, rise up, but here it means stand: stand where everyone can see you. Everyone probably knew this man. Capernaum wasn’t a large place. Here is one of the people who cannot work, who is dependent upon charity. He could not function according to his chosen skill, whatever it may have been. Now he is in front of them all. ‘Look at him! You can see that he’s handicapped. Is this going to be another great miracle?’ This instruction to stand in the open will cause problems for the man. He knows the Pharisees are against Christ and it is the sabbath, and he is being told to stand where he is the centre of attention and it is obvious that Christ is going to heal him.
Application
Recognise you have a withered soul, with no life in it, no ability to relate to God. Unless you are healed, you will perish eternally. You can do nothing about it yourself. You must come to the only one who can help. You must come to the Saviour of the world as you would come to a physician, telling him all your symptoms and hiding nothing. You must make no excuses but let him see the full extent of your condition. You must repent of your sin and be willing for him to change you and become your Lord, having the right to command you how to act, speak and think.
