‘Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.’ Some seed fell into a patch of ground which had deeper soil, but there was a problem: there were thorns in that same soil. The thorns couldn’t be seen at the time of sowing, but they were there, waiting to come up. This seed did better; it germinated. Some root was put down, some growth took place. But the thorns choked it off. What are the thorns? Well the Lord Jesus Christ interprets down in verse 18. ‘These are they which are sown among thorns, such as hear the word and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches [covetousness, things, cars, splendid possessions], and the lusts of other things [fame, notice, flattery], entering in, choke the word. You can't live for this world and for the Lord at the same time. And the plant was choked.
