They were filled with derision. ‘They laughed him to scorn’, says our translation, and it is the best translation.
They ridiculed him just as they ridicule the Scriptures today, but Christ is untroubled by their scorn. To him it is nothing but a prelude to their amazement/ Why should Christians worry about errors of judgment by an unbelieving world. The world laughs us to scorn: ‘You go to church? You listen to those preachers from teaching that old book? Don’t you believe that religious nonsense; it is primitive. Modern man knows better than to believe in a God who made all things. Conversion is just a temporary psychological change.’ But time goes by and the true Christian holds on his path. He proves he has resources that the worldling does not have. He lives by an altogether higher standard, for the law of God is written on his heart.
Christ expelled these mockers. They were not going to be party to the intimacy of this miracle. Those who were chosen to see it proceed up to the room where the child lies. If we scorn the Lord we are put out and do not see the wonderful works of God.
What we need is an operation on our souls which only Christ can do. We need him to rebuild our lives. We need him to forgive all our sins, to remember all we have ever done, to evaluate perfectly our guilt and to provide a perfect remedy for it. Unless he has perfect knowledge of our situation he cannot do this, so how can he be mistaken about such a basic matter as whether a child is dead or alive?
