‘Talitha cumi’ – an Aramaic expression meaning ‘Little lamb, arise’. It is the most affectionate of terms; she will be his little girl, one of his family.
We are like her. Christ takes charge of our situation. Before he comes to me I don’t talk to God; I don’t smile; there is no vivacity about me; I am a lifeless thing. It is a picture of tragedy. The world has no solution to death. It can only weep and mourn. But then he summons me to life. I hear his voice and am filled with a desire to respond and to come to him. I have my nature changed, and straight away new strength courses through me. New feelings come in, and sensitivities and faculties come to life. We can sense the Lord. I can understand the meaning of life. I have a desire to please him, to understand his word, to be with his people. Do you hear the call of Christ? She was dead; she could not hear. But he speaks and his voice brings life even as he calls us. You would never be able to come. When you hear the gospel call, it is all of Christ; it is him raising us to spiritual life.
Those who knew that person before conversion – their temper, their obstinacy, their coarseness and deceit – are surprised and astonished, just as there was astonishment over this little girl. We are pretty astonished even at ourselves and the change in us.
