But now he came and he bowed down before Christ – ‘worshipped’ in Mark is strong – he fell down before him. Even the demons had to acknowledge him, however reluctantly, but the spirit of the man wanted to prostrate himself before Christ. This unclean spirit, was not just ceremonially unclean – that goes without saying. This was a spirit of deep immorality, in fact it was many spirits to whom, through immorality, he had exposed himself. He was in isolation because he had been driven away from places of population. He was deeply immoral and wild and coarse. We live in an age which is driving itself ever more deeply into coarseness of speech. People laugh and cackle at the coarsest of things. We live in a dead society that never praises or seeks the help of the Lord. This man was literally so. But Christ who does nothing by chance came across Galilee for the specific purpose of deliver this man. He chose this most extreme of cases to show that nothing is beyond his power, and to make this wretched man a trophy of grace so that none need despair of forgiveness.
