But then he does something else; he asks the demon its name. This seems curious. We were not aware that unclean spirits had names. When Christ asks a question you know there is a special reason because he did not need to ask. He knows all as God. He asks for the benefit of the disciples and for the man, to make him articulate his condition. There is a danger. If Christ heals, and demon comes out, the disciples may think it is so easy. But Lord will show it is not easy, simple, straightforward. A legion was a military division consisting of about 3000 to 6000. Christ does this to show us more about this terrible case. The demon answers that its name is Legion – ‘for we are many’ – and during this encounter we can be sure that the demon is forced by the Lord to answer truthfully. The man is possessed by multiple demons. Elsewhere Christ tells us this is possible (Matthew 12:43-45). The disciples and the people of the region are to be made to understand just how bad this case is, and what tremendous power the Lord has. The demons recognise his supreme authority over them in his incarnate state.
Application
How irrational man is, to choose the here and now over heaven. ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ The name reflects not just the number of demons but the complexity of the situation, the power of evil. The military system of a Roman legion is in mind. The devil is determined to keep you from God as if a military unit is operating in you. ‘Repent’ we are told, but immediately questions arise within us: what about evolution; hasn’t science proved God does not exist? Or, will I have to give up this sin? Or, some Christians are bad, or, a friend comes into mind who you will have to leave. There is an organised opposition to prevent you turning to Christ.
