The apostles have completed the preaching tour which Christ had sent them to carry out, and now they return to him, coming back from different parts of Galilee in their appointed pairs. It would have taken a little while for them all to return to him, and so Mark says that they ‘gathered themselves together to Jesus’, no doubt at some prearranged time.
Well they might have thought they were going to sit down and have a picnic somewhere, and time off, but what they were going to do was to listen, and to listen to the Saviour and to listen to him preaching not for half an hour or for one hour, but for the best part of the day, and that was rest and refreshment, though not as they had expected. It is a wonderful thing, the word of God. It's the best rest. The Lord’s Day is a day of rest. It is a day of preaching too, a day of studying, immersing ourselves in God's word.
