Again Christ charged them not to make known this healing (Mark 1:44; 5:43). As Hendriksen comments, this is a little hard to understand in this case, because Christ is in Perea, not in Judea where the Pharisees were on the look out for him.
You may be aware of certain gifts and a voice in you says, ‘What a fine person I am.’ You may not know you are spiritually deaf and dumb – you can’t see it. One young woman was convinced she was a great athlete and it turned out that she was conspicuously awful at it. Or a young man had speech impediment and wanted to be a sports commentator. Yes, that is sad in this area, but it is fatal when it comes to the soul.
Some viewed spiritually are deaf and dumb. They don’t understand God and the reality of heaven and hell. They are heading for eternity. When a sinner seeks the Lord and finds him, one who is weak is made strong, the will held in bondage is freed, the unclean mind is made pure. Previously I loved my sin. If someone tried to explain the way of salvation I would not tolerate it. My conscience was not active; I had no fear of the Lord, I was not even consciously afraid of death. In order to come to know God my attitude and my nature must be changed. If I will not have mercy, forgiveness of Christ, I must stand before God in judgment. Whatever the law says will be applied to me, and every mouth will be stopped. No excuses will be accepted. We cannot blame it on the circumstances of life. There will be a terrified silence. All will be overwhelmed by his holiness and go into judgment. All insolence, all filthy humour, all defiance of God will be shut out of heaven. Are you forgiven or condemned? As he healed in body so he heals in soul.
Christ had nothing to gain from this man. He asked no favour and took no payment. He received this man and healed him instantly. And so with conversion of the soul Christ has to do all the work, and to reconstruct our soul throughout the remainder of our lives. He sets our affections free to appreciate and love him. All we have to do is to desire Christ, and come straight to him in repentance.
