‘For laying aside the commandment of God’ – Moses alone, the law alone, the ceremonies that God gave to the Jews in ancient times – ‘ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.’ What right do the traditions of men have to be put alongside the commandments of God? The commandments of God are perfect; they cannot be improved upon. They lead to life, and never need to be changed. The traditions of men are the insights of finite limited human beings, who often misunderstand what God requires, and lead men in the wrong direction. They are presumptuous and as in this case they so often contradict his word and bar the way to the kingdom of heaven.
Application
This is a matter of authority. How we need this today, even among professing Christians. What is the authority for what we do? How we worship, how we behave, the way in which we evangelise? We are under authority. How does the word of God say things should be done? That is what matters. Or are we following human ideas? There is a tremendous amount of following human ideas in these days.
