‘And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.’ In the case of this man Christ’s instruction is don't go back to the old environment. Don't go back to your old sins. Don't go back to your old pleasures and habits. Certainly go back to your old friends, but not to be led by them anymore. Win them if you can, and demonstrate that the Lord has changed you, but don’t be totally in line with them anymore. Following regeneration comes illumination, but it may be phased, not immediate. The mind, the affections, the heart are all summoned. By the time it comes to baptism and joining the church, it must all be in place; it must be obvious. You have been regenerated, illuminated, moved to love him fully and wholly, and your will has been conquered. It's a lesson in pastoral theology is also a gospel call.
Application
Where are you with regard to conversion? Has God touched you? Has he taken your hand? Is he leading you into salvation? Has he given you life and changed you? Oh praise him and thank him. You're beginning to love what once you hated. You’re beginning to see. Oh, make sure you repent fully of your sin. Trust him. Believe in Calvary alone. Don't think there's anything in you that will count towards salvation. Trust in him, solely, and you will come right the way through: illuminated, fully moved.
