With one last terrible cry and spasm the demon came out. The spirit cried and rent him sore, one last terrible seizure. The demon set up such a fight to drag him back. The spirit tried one last attempt to keep control of him. He didn't want to go out. The lad was lying on the ground, ‘insomuch that many said, He has died.’ The Lord cast out that demon and allowed the boy to appear as dead in order to show that it was he who would then raise him up. They had never seen him with composed feature. He stood up straight. He was calm and that high energy which radiated from him had gone. There was such a change. I imagine they embraced as never before and spoke to each other with wonder and joy. All the bystanders were amazed at the mighty hand of God. ‘But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.’ The healing is completed perfectly. The child who was in the grip of something so horrific is released and restored to his father and his family in his right minded, able to hear, able to communicate. From being an object of revulsion and fear, he has become a fully function human being. All were amazed at the mighty power of God.

Application

When we turn our back on the world, there may be a little wrench, as we leave behind the darling sins and perhaps we leave behind some friends if they are determined to try to pull us back into the old life. The old life doesn't want to give you up. All the way to the place of repentance and prayer where you will give yourself to Christ and ask him to save you, and repent of your sin; all the way to falling on your knees, the old life will be saying, ‘Don't go; don’t go, come back.’ It wants to devour you. But what a wonderful thing when you come to Christ, and you know your sins are forgiven. Your nature has been made new, you have union with Christ, God is your Father, and you can pray and be heard. He is your helper in heaven. You are on the highway to heaven. That is the picture in the healing that was intended by the Lord. How we need him. How much we must come to him.

Are you without Christ, unstable, lurching from one thing to another? Do you have no father to plead on your behalf? Then you must go to Christ yourself and ask him to receive you.
