The Gospel of Matthew opens with a phrase reminiscent of the words used repeatedly in Genesis to divide the book into its various sections, such as in Genesis 5:1: ‘This is the book of the generations of Adam’. These sections do not just include genealogies, but record the history of various lives.
God is faithful and no word that comes out of his mouth can fail. Such a long time after the promise was given God fulfilled his word, for he watches over his own word to fulfil it, even though no man sees. The one to whom the promise was originally made was long since dead, but the promise was passed down from one generation to another, and the faithful wondered if they would see its fulfilment in their time. How much we should trust the Lord who takes more care to guard his word and cares more about his faithfulness than even we do. For us it is a matter of personal blessing, for him it is a matter of blessing to countless millions and the protection of his divine integrity.
