Joseph had not fully made up his mind what he would do, but his humble instincts led him in the direction indicated in the previous verse. But the Lord will not leave him in this state of misunderstanding and distress for long, and will not leave one believer concluding evil of another believer on the basis of wrong information.
God’s word coming to our souls has an authority which is stronger even than the testimony of those we know best in this world. Indeed it is stronger than the testimony of our own senses. When the seeker after God hears the call of God in the gospel it dispels all doubts, and he knows he has heard unchanging truth which the testimony of man cannot contradict. This assurance allows the truth to enter deep within us where it finds its permanent home.
God notes the grief of his children and sends them relief. His providences do them good, even when hard experiences seem to be undeserved, but his compassion will not let them suffer indefinitely. ‘He knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust’ (Psalm 103:14).
