This will be done not only in the Jewish nation but before Gentile kings ‘for a testimony against them.’ Even though Christ has given clear instructions that at present the disciples are not to go into any city of the Samaritans, or into the way of the Gentiles, the gospel will in future be preached to the Gentiles, and without question this will be done under God’s instruction.
This happened to the apostles as Acts records, but was it only for the apostles? What about the English martyrs? Could they claim the same promises? Yes, we too exercise a ministry of judgment by our witness. We are without doubt the most powerful people. Although we find ourselves in a position of weakness, standing perhaps as prisoners, before the authorities of this world, and like Pilate who said to Christ, ‘Knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee?’ (John 19:10), they assume they have real power over us, yet with Christ we may be sure that they have no power over us unless it had been given to them from above. The real reason we are there is to have a testimony to them or even against them, and we must hold ourselves bravely to deliver that testimony.
