Matthew 11:1

All the sayings we have read in Matthew 10 were spoken to the disciples on this occasion, whatever other times some of them were also taught, and certainly some are repeated even within Matthew’s Gospel. Mark and Luke record that the apostles now went out to teach as instructed, but the Lord Jesus also continued to teach, and Matthew focuses on this. His purpose is to establish that Jesus is the Christ, particularly in the light of Old Testament Scriptures. So for his purposes the mission of the twelve is irrelevant. Christ’s purpose in sending out the twelve was not to relieve himself from preaching, but to respond to the pressing need for more labourers to be sent forth into the harvest. Like the apostles Christ continued to carry out an itinerant ministry to cover the maximum amount of ground so that all could hear.
Application
He went ‘to teach and preach’. There is a distinction between the two, and this is not the only time they are brought together. ‘To preach’ is, in Greek, ‘to announce’, ‘to proclaim’, the activity of a herald. ‘To teach’ is to explain the details. They are different activities. The disciples were sent to preach, to announce Christ. Christ did more; he added the details. We seek to have the same distinction. We preach the gospel to the unconverted. We teach, and give more detail to those who are Christians. It is sad when the two activities are merged.
