Christ commends John before the multitude, and he does so in the most solemn terms, using the introductory formula reserved for the most important of sayings: ‘Verily I say unto you.’ Why is John commended so highly? It is Christ’s reward for his servant’s life and work.
Does this characterise us? If you are a seeker after God, are you seeking zealously? If you are a child of God, are you militant in your faith? John was. He led the way. Upon John rests zeal that is characteristic of the church. We must never forget our privileges. Perhaps I have brought trouble on myself by my witness and boldness for the gospel. The answer to everything is that I am a privileged person.
