Matthew 11:26 Commentary and Bible Study

The Lord Jesus Christ expresses absolute confidence in the will of the Father. His will and his purposes are perfect; his choices are perfect; what gives pleasure to him is perfect, because all of the Godhead and all his attributes are involved in those choices and they are made with infinite wisdom. They achieve perfectly the goals that the Godhead has in view, which are to glorify his name, to redeem a people for eternity, and to expose the wickedness, foolishness, and weakness of sin and of all Satan’s strategies. The Son admires all that the Father does, and draws encouragement knowing that, in spite of all that is done to oppose them, the Father’s secret purposes are being fulfilled. If we ask, why things are as they are, the answer is that it is according to the good pleasure of God. If we want to know why the elect were chosen, it is according to the good pleasure of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are secondary causes, and God is free from all taint of evil, but ultimately, only what is according to his will takes place; there is no other sovereign being in heaven or earth. Christ will continue to express this confidence even though the will of the Father involves the Son making an atonement for sin, and suffering the indescribable punishment which his people deserve. ‘It seemed good in your sight’ is the explanation for all, and the answer to every question that we can ask.
