The men of Nineveh are long since dead, but they will have something to say to his generation, Christ tells them. All generations will come together when they are all raised to life at the end of the world.
The world must compare its response to the gospel to that of past generations who had far less light than today, and yet who believed. Nineveh heard the prophet of God who was sent to them on just one occasion and listened and obeyed the first time they heard. The word of God was not known to them before. By contrast, in our age the gospel is so readily available. The word of God can be obtained in every city, in almost any bookshop. Churches are open, and men and women can at any time seek out the message if they feel their need, yet the majority have ignored the abundant opportunity given to them. Many will be indicted with this offence in the last day, and they will be unable to deny the truth of it. They showed such carelessness to their own souls. They and they alone are responsible for their eternal condemnation.
