Matthew 13:25 Commentary and Bible Study

The Bible teaches that there is an enemy of souls. Modern man in his so-called wisdom chooses not to believe in a personal devil. Ironically, the religions that he makes for himself are fanciful, contradictory, inadequate to answer the great questions of life. But he prefers anything other than coming to the true God in repentance and faith and submitting to his rule. The work of the enemy of souls is done in secret, so that few know what he has done until the damage comes to light. The Scripture reveals the events behind the fall, but without this revelation, man would find it hard to make sense of the state of the world. Indeed, society wants to continually assert the goodness of man, and therefore its approach to so many problems is unrealistic and doomed to fail. Satan came at night, while men slept, taking advantage of the darkness. In the parable, the servants were completely unaware of what had happened; they saw the results but they did not know the cause. Satan’s work is malicious, spiteful, as harmful as he can make it. He hates God with intensity, and would do anything that he can to spoil God’s work and prevent God’s good purposes coming to pass. This was an act of vandalism. It brought no gain to the enemy other than to see hurt come to the sower of the owner of the field. All his pleasure was in causing harm, preventing good, He knew the farmer had sowed his crop to produce a harvest of wheat, and his strategy was to make it impossible for the wheat to be gathered in. Perhaps he hoped the field would be abandoned and all the work done in sowing the good seed would come to nothing. He hoped that the task of separating the two would be too much trouble to be worth bothering.
