What does this mean? What are these keys? Christ speaks of himself as possessing the keys of the kingdom of heaven: ‘I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death’ (Revelation 1:18). By this he means that he has absolute authority to determine who may and who may not enter heaven and who will and will not be sent to hell.
Today it seems that the forces of evil are victorious. True churches are relatively few; we see trenchant denial of God, and perversion of moral system, and yet our theme is that church will always be victorious, but that doesn’t seem the case.

1. You must always remember worldwide varies enormously. There are places where people in hundreds of thousands are finding the Lord.
2. In history a barren time often leads to a time of reformation, revival. Some things so low that they give way to blessing.
3. Even in times of decline, there are ways in which God’s truth is triumphant. In an age of godlessness, every conversion is like being saved from the rapids. In such a day there is an opportunity for the wonder of conversion to be demonstrated. In past the generality of people held to certain standards. From one point of view people seem almost halfway to conversion already.
4. Without days of decline, you might never believe man is as bad as God says he is. Restraint is removed and there is almost no limit to the plunge. It is a vindication of God’s word. An age like this shows that reliability of the Scripture. God allows some things on earth that his judgement is seen to be just. Often he leaves the restraint on, but sometimes he takes it off altogether.

In the last day not one true saved believer will be lost. The final victory of Christ will not be like battles on earth – casualties on both sides, where the victory is often narrow. In the last day God’s victory will be absolute – total defeat of the devil. They will not have brought down one true saint. Not one success. What a mismatch! What a failure for the devil!
