(Synoptics: Matthew 17:24-27) Jesus and his disciples had only just arrived, so we should not listen to those who say that he didn’t normally pay the tax and the authorities caught up with him. He did not have to pay until he came to Capernaum.
This situation is similar to that which we often find ourselves in. Peter was not with his Lord at this time, and therefore had to give an answer himself. He instinctively wanted to say the right thing, and to defend his Lord, but he did not fully understand what answer to give. Even while he was on earth, Christ allowed such a circumstance to occur. We too find ourselves in difficult circumstances on earth, separated from our Lord who is in heaven, and having to defend his cause. What will we say? Sometimes we do not know what to say. We give an answer as best we can, but our answer may not be completely right. May the Lord give us more knowledge, for we rightly judge that there is a correct answer to every difficult question that we could ever be asked, and the Lord can teach us the right answer.
