Christ represents himself as searching, each one of his elect receiving all the attention of a single lost sheep that has gone astray. An earthly shepherd searches but does not know if he will find his wandering sheep.
The self-righteous do not want to submit to God or yield their lives to him. Maybe they know they need to repent, but the thought of doing so is so distasteful to them that they push it away. They would rather carry on in their pretence, even though they know they will certainly be exposed on the day of judgment, than to come into the light now. Why do they do this? It is foolishness. It is insulting to God. If we are proud – and we all are – repentance is too hard. You may pass all the exams you like; you still have to repent. Conversion is about coming home to God.
There was a motorist on a rally who got lost. He took everything out of car and laid it out in a cross on the sand. He assumed there was a search party and he was seen indeed from the air. But the lost sheep had no idea there was a rescue mission on. May we all realise that the Son of God is hunting for us, even though we are so worthless in ourselves. We are one among millions, yet his amazing mercy and compassion, causes him to single us out. He finds his sheep and when found, rejoices, laying it on his shoulder. He did it for me. He suffered and died. ‘Laid it on his shoulders’, says Luke. He took the weight of the sheep. We are now in his care now, on the way home, never to be lost again.
Perhaps you don’t know of the atoning death of Christ, of the plan of salvation. You have no idea that the Son of God must come and die for you. Some protest: ‘That isn’t right. It would be immoral for God to punish his own Son for what others have done.’ They do not know what they are talking about. Sin has got to be paid for; punishment has to be taken. As the God Man, Christ spent six hours on the cross and took our punishment. How did he do that? Just by hanging in the heat of the sun? No, no amount of physical suffering could have done it. He suffered an invisible punishment equal to all we would have suffered in hell for ever. This stretches beyond human understanding.
