(Synoptics: Matthew 18:23-35)The parable is about two debts owed by two different servants: the one debt enormous, and the other relatively small. The first debt represents what we all owe to God – a debt which is so great that it is impossible to pay back; the second debt represents what we may owe to one another.
The kingdom of heaven is like the situation in which a king takes account of his servants. The king represents Christ and the servants represents all of us – believers and unbelievers. This parable speaks of entrance into the kingdom of heaven, and is about those who succeed in entering, and those who try to enter but fail. The tragedy is that there are those who start to enter in and seem to come in the right way, but there is a hidden flaw in their approach, and eventually this comes to light. Those who come in the right way have had a great confrontation with God, and come through, and are blessed. They do not offer some shallow prayer for deliverance, but have a real desire to know his mercy and love. They are assured of eternal life, a great change within them. There is a great difference between those different kinds of prayer. True prayer is so distinctive.
