(Synoptics: Matthew 2:16-18)Herod had been careful at first to disguise his true murderous intent and had no reason to believe he had not been successful. He had become skilled at hypocrisy over many years, and certainly did not take account of any supernatural intervention to warn the wise men of what was really in his mind.
Herod shows by this ruthlessness what great value he set on his throne and on his own person, that he would protect it at the expense of the lives of many children. Ruthless men climb the ladder of success and fame and power in this world at the cost of many around them who are worth far more than they are. How much sorrow Herod’s action caused is seen in the fact that this awful event and the intense sorrow that resulted was the subject of prophecy given so many centuries in advance. But what is that to someone who see the entire creation as serving their interests? How great a distortion of reality pride and anger and jealousy create in the minds of the wicked!
