‘So the last shall be first, and the first last.’ Christ repeats the principle of the kingdom which prompted the parable in the first place (Matthew 19:30).
Maybe there are those to whom God has appealed for many years; as youngsters they have been brought up in the church. But then there are others who haven’t got the same training or knowledge, and yet they will go into the kingdom of heaven, while those brought up under the sound of the gospel remain outside. They will see all sorts of others coming in, while they to whom the Lord appealed the longest are left unconverted. Are you a young person brought up by believing parents and your life has been shaped from the earliest times by the Scripture? Don’t throw it all away. God will still have you later if you come to him, but what a waste! Trust in him while you are young. Trust in him alone. Say to Christ, ‘You have suffered for a wretch like me. Receive me as an undeserving sinner into your kingdom.’
Some may have worshipped all their lives in a ritual-based version of the Christian religion. They assume that their years of service must count for something, and that they are owed more by God than those who have not worshipped at all. But that is a fatal mistake and is the attitude of one who has never understood the grace of God. He has spent all his life thinking that he was earning the favour of God, and did not see that the gift of life is something that is utterly beyond his ability to pay for. Those hired last represent people who cannot pretend that they can do anything to earn God’s favour, but receive it as a matter of free grace. This is the only way that any will ever receive eternal life.
